Description

A small-batch handmade solid walnut kinetic desk automaton powered by 1 AAA battery (not included), made in China by a FolkMake partner studio, this Wooden Whale Automaton uses quiet gear-and-linkage motion to let the whale rise and dip like a calm tide, offering a soothing reset for your space.

Behind the Product

The whale is designed as a tiny ritual of steadiness: one gentle turn, then a slow, tidal movement that invites your breathing to follow.

For Calm and Protection, it is not about decoration alone, but about creating a small boundary of peace on a desk or shelf, a place your eyes can land when you need to settle.

Materials & Size

Body and base: Solid walnut, finished with eco-friendly wax oil; natural grain and color variation are part of its character.

Power: 1 AAA battery (not included).

Dimensions (overall): 7 cm * 8 cm * 16 cm (2.8 in * 3.1 in * 6.3 in). Package size may vary by batch.

Craft Process & Handmade Character

Craft Process: Studio-made in small batches and hand-polished for a warm, smooth touch, the mechanism is tuned by hand so the motion stays even and unhurried.

Handmade Character: Each piece shows unique walnut grain, subtle tone shifts, and fine hand-finishing marks; small differences in motion tempo are normal and make every object one of a kind.

Each wooden automaton in this collection is created by the artisan team at Dipingxian Studio, one of FolkMake’s founding craft studios. It is not sourced from an anonymous factory catalog, nor is it dropshipped through a third party.

What makes this collection different is not only the animal form, but the movement. The studio handles the wood shaping, sanding, mechanism fitting, hand-finishing, motion adjustment, and final inspection of each piece. Precision tools may be used where structural accuracy matters, but the balance, rhythm, and final character of every automaton are shaped and checked by real hands.

FolkMake’s online operations team handles product presentation, global selling, logistics, and customer care, so our artisans can stay focused on the work itself. This online team also includes young makers and creatives from different fields, working together to help real handmade pieces reach people around the world.

After essential brand operating costs are deducted, the remaining profit from each purchase goes directly back to Dipingxian Studio and the artisans behind the work.

FolkMake exists to help real handmade work reach the global stage with dignity and transparency. Your purchase supports real hands, real wood, and real motion — not a faceless corporate supply chain.

From Raw Wood to Ocean-Calm Motion

Each manta ray begins as solid walnut and beech, cut from real logs and brought to a working craft bench, not a factory line. The body is hand carved and finely sanded, then sealed with eco-friendly wax oil so every curve feels warm and organic. The base is machine-cut for structural precision, but every gear, rod, and joint is hand-fitted, adjusted, and test-run until the glide feels smooth and lifelike. Made in small batches, each piece carries its own grain, color, and tiny tool marks – the quiet proof that your automaton is a studio artwork, not a mass-produced gadget.

First Use Guide: Charging & Touch Power Button

For the best first-time experience, please fully charge your manta ray sculpture before turning it on. Connect it to a low-current USB power source (such as a computer USB port or a charger with output ≤0.5 A) and charge for about 2 hours. During charging, the brass touch button on the front will not start the sculpture—this is a normal protection design. After it is fully charged and unplugged, a light touch on the brass button will power it on; touch again to turn it off. Each full charge can usually support about 3–4 hours of use. Please do not use high-power fast-charging adapters, and do not operate the sculpture while it is plugged in, to protect the internal mechanism and battery life. If you touch the button and nothing happens, simply recharge for 2 hours and try again.

    FAQ

Yes. All four pieces are kinetic wooden automata designed to create gentle repeated motion rather than sit still like ordinary decor. The manta ray uses smooth wingbeats, the jellyfish moves in a slow floating rhythm, the whale rises and dips like a calm tide, and the swan glides with a soft neck-and-wing motion.

Yes. All four are small-batch handmade pieces made by Dipingxian Studio in China. The product pages also note hand-polishing, natural wood grain variation, and small differences in movement feel as part of their handmade character.

Yes. These pieces are especially well suited to desks, offices, reading corners, and other quiet home spaces because they are designed as 30-60 second reset objects for work breaks and calm daily rituals. Their movement is gentle and meditative rather than loud or distracting.

Each piece is handmade. The product pages estimate about 1-2 days for crafting before dispatch, and standard international shipping usually takes 7-15 days after shipping, with tracking included.

Choose based on the kind of movement and presence you want. The manta ray feels broad and sculptural, the jellyfish feels lighter and more meditative, the whale feels compact and tidal, and the swan feels balanced and poised. If power type matters, the manta ray and jellyfish are rechargeable, while the whale and swan use AAA batteries.

Yes. These pieces work especially well as gifts for someone who likes calming desk decor because all four are positioned as small kinetic reset objects for work breaks and quiet home rituals. They feel more distinctive and personal than ordinary static decor, while still being easy to place on a desk or shelf.

    1. Store away from direct sun and heat/AC vents; keep indoor humidity around 40–60% for best wood stability.
    2. Wipe with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth only — no soaking, abrasives, alcohol, or solvents; keep away from liquids.
    3. Use on a stable surface and handle gently — do not pull wings/rods; USB-C (5V) charging only, do not operate while charging; if stored long-term, top up the battery about every 3 months.

Crafted by hand. Shaped by your choices.

Every piece at FolkMake is made by hand by our artisans, with close attention to material, finish, and form.

When you choose a detail, finish, or visual direction, it becomes part of the making itself — so the final piece feels more personal, more intentional, and more truly yours.

We care about real craftsmanship, distinct character, and lasting worth — never anonymous mass production. Nothing leaves FolkMake until it feels right in hand and meets our standards.

    The FolkMake Way

Each piece at FolkMake is chosen with a clear intention in mind — whether you are drawn to calm and protection, luck and new beginnings, love and connection, strength and confidence, abundance and gratitude, or healing and comfort. That makes it easier to choose not just what looks right, but what feels right to keep or give.

We care about hand-built form, careful finishing, and the kind of detail that only comes from time and attention. Every piece is judged for precision, balance, and how it feels in real life — so the craftsmanship is something you can actually see and feel.

Every FolkMake piece is finished one by one, so slight variations in color, texture, or finish are part of what makes it real. The overall design stays true, but each one carries its own small differences — a quiet sign it was made by hand, not pulled from factory stock.
